The Branch of Quality Systems (BQS) monitors and assesses the quality of environmental data through proficiency testing of USGS field water-quality operations, and national precipitation-deposition networks and by documenting variability and bias of chemical and sedimentological data produced by from governmental and extra-governmental analytical laboratories.
